Dog urine spots: diagnose first, repair by grass type.

Follow the complete path from pattern check to living-turf decision, grass-specific repair, and repeat prevention.

Brown circular lawn spot with a darker green outer ringPattern clue: dead center + darker green ring

30-second field check

Does the whole pattern point to urine?

No single visual clue proves the cause. Use location, pattern, plant symptoms, timing, and site history together.

01

Location

Do the spots match the places and route your dog regularly uses?

02

Pattern

Are there several small circles rather than one expanding or irrigation-shaped area?

03

Green ring

Does a straw-colored center have darker green growth around the edge?

04

Leaf clues

Are leaves dry without lesions, matting, water-soaked tissue, or visible fungal growth?

05

Timing

Did the pattern follow repeated visits rather than a weather or irrigation change?

06

Uncertainty

If the clues conflict, can local extension review whole-pattern and close leaf photos?

Stop when the clues conflict.

Spreading patches, leaf lesions, insects, root loss, irrigation-shaped damage, or symptoms outside dog-access areas deserve a broader diagnosis before treatment.

The repair fork

Fresh, stressed, and dead turf need different responses.

Dilute a fresh deposit promptly with plain water. Protect living turf from another concentrated deposit. Clear and repair fully dead turf with material matched to the grass and season.
